Can we beat vBulletin/IPB?

this afternoon, i’m chatting with Allan, and he just asked me a simple question: do you think you can write a script that can be better than vB?

the answer was quite simple, but i never wrote it nowhere, so here it is:

Sure.

… end of answer!

nah, seriously, what i see in this market may be something most people does not evaluate, because they do not know the whole story of the web. So yes, it is simple to beat vBulletin. What makes it so popular and so respected?… when it started in 2001, there was no real solution for communities, because it was a new concept, and the only real solutions were costly and for schools or groups, like UBB which vB is a branch of btw.

So, vBulletin was quite alone on the market, there was no alternative at that price, and they worked pretty well on it for the first 3 years, until 3.0. IPB was there, but at first it was a volunteers project where i was involved, and the goal was to beat other projects without looking at vB. when IPS called the shot and moved to a paid product, their goal was then to beat vB, and the competition raised with the arrival of some forums like phpBB and MyBB etc in the course… but they are all from volunteers, so they can not be raised commercially.

What is the future of vB?… if they are not moving to a larger market, touching webmasters and multi-sites owners, they will stop evolving. A forum is a forum, no matter what feature you add to it. 50% of the job is made by the designers and the admins, so the software itself is atop of comparaisons when we list user-friendly points, nothing more.

vBulletin, IPB, phpBB, they are all competing among themselves, but none is trying to invade other markets like the classified ads, advertising, auctions etc… because it would branch their market wider and they can not loose the chance they actually have to sit on a solid ground. If they make an error, they loose.

That is where we have the advantage; we start anew, we have no barriers, we have no solid ground, we will be the ones writing it, and we will grab all the markets that they are not touching yet. to have such ability, IB would have to have a secret group working on a vBulletin 10, with all the named features… which is complicated in that kind of business because they have a business plan to follow, and their stock holders would be shocked to see such move.

So, with IPS, it is different, IP.Board is multi-levels… nope. their biggest part of the cake is commercial, they deal with companies, big names, and small clients for fan sites. If they add a feature, it is due to clients requests… the more they add, the more staff they need to support their script and their clients.

It is easier for a new project to make plans like this, because we will be able to evolve on due times, instead of breaking a beat to flip on side. We do not have to maintain an old backward compatible script like vB is… we do not have to recode our entire core to fit with the new PHP or LAMP structures… we’re building it ahead of the demand… what we code today is to be compliant with the servers of tomorrow, so we’re taking a leap nobody can right now.

And what about the other softwares, like the Esvon suite? i have these codes in hand — developer key, a privilege. most of these big projects aside of the communities are driven by old codes, to be easier to install on anything. their codes are obsolete, not designer friendly, not compatible with new servers securities etc… and they usually encrypt their codes not for secrets, but for hiding their horrible codes. Esvon suite is coded in PHP 4.2, updated on the flow of bugs. same for phpAuctions, a great engine for auctions that i had to entirely recode 5 years ago… was coded in PHP 3, i recoded it to 4.2… and their versions did not raise that much, so i suppose it is still the horrible code. *(would you pay 1000$ for a non-encrypted version?… they have more than 3000 clients who paid the 400$ script, that’s only an auction, not even community integrated)

Imagine that we could beat them all because we will have a great marketing plan with ads and resellers that talk about our product… We can build something, we’re not stupids, and we know where we go… do you think IB know where their vB 4.0 goes?.. they do not even have a roadmap for 4.1…

New access to some leaks… « some »

ok guys who are accessing this forum, this is a leaking forum where people can post their ideas and suggestions.

nothing is coded here, you will not gain any prize of you invite others to read or if you leak that information on twitter… because we will act like the USA government, you do not exists.

anyway, who would be willing enought to say they are my friends today?

i want echoes, opinions, needs, ideas, brainstorms… LET’S GO!

I was evaluating the value of the Calendar Enhancement bundle…

So, what would be the cost of sale?… 50$ per license? *(lifetime we must say).. or 40, 30, 20, 10$ ???

what does that cost to have the best calendar engine on the whole market?

you can crawl the whole internet, you will not see any calendar with discussions per event, rsvp, type of events, permissions based events, classified display, subscriptions per calendar and per event, alarms, attachments/images/video per events, rss feeds per calendar, a great new design…

the client who asked me to work this out has put 5000$ on the table. « strangely » he vanished when it was time to pay the upfront. but i had most of the work done, so i completed it, and i was ready to release it when i had my accident *(remember the backspace)…

so in the last weeks i produced some screenies that you can see in the official thread, but they are not complete. i am actually evaluating the redesign of the calendar look, because some pages look strange. and i will merge this engine with the Social Groups Events, because the new engine is quite efficient and can be ported to the Social groups, and some other things.

So what i was thinking on doing was a « version 1.0 », with the forum part, and then start a version 2.0 with the blog, social groups, cmps/vbadvanced, and some other details like the project tools even if abandonned by Jelsoft…

but as i’m unsure to be able to provide anything after the move to our new project, i think i will simply release the Forum mixture and see where it goes… are you interested to have it?

If you have friends interested to have that kind of engine, you can tell them, and let them know that i was making pressures at IB/vBulletin Solutions to make a deal on that engine… if they hear that a lot of people are requesting that engine, they surely will have to listen and talk to me if it is not too late. I know they will not ask another coder to do the same kind of work, because it would take them way too long and would cost the same anyway…

so, some vote?

Disable product if styleid=x

As I’m not using many other products and plugins but yours (currently 6 1/2) and vBSEO, I hope it would be ok to ask here..

Some products, the Nexia’s Web Crawlers Bundle product as an example I’m only using when the stock vBulletin style (my admin style sort of say) is selected.
Wanting to reduce that query on forumhome when my main style is selected I wondered if it would be possible to create a global plugin enabling and disabling products if styleid=x?

vbE is actually recruiting

The Situation:

We’re actually building the white paper of a large project for webmasters and multi-sites owners. Our project goal is to deliver a first public release in the next 9 months. Our roadmap is clear, we know where we go and what will be the project itself, based on the knowledge of the entire staff here.

The Job:

Making coffee and taking care of the babies.

Actually we need someone with the wills to see the world evolve. We don’t pay you anyway, so you really need to know what you want when the project goes public, because that is where you will make your profits.

We are searching for coders with imagination, some guys who are willing to push their knowledge and work to a newer level, to focus on 2015, not 2008… There is no backward compatibility in our project, we want you to bring us the best of the net of tomorrow, and even create it if it does not exists.

We talk multi-languages, we are on same planet and we all are kids or parents, so we all share something in common.

I am well known to be a trouble-maker, a black-sheep… so be it, i want other black sheeps to join, i want people with ideas, who can communicate and ready to roll.

contact me…

Ok, i’ve been banned from the whole vBulletin.com site… so, what’s next?

what next…humm

just some fun.

i don’t care if Wayne banned me from the site, he hates me since day one of vB, and i give him back very well… he is british, i’m scotish, it’s always the same, always some pathetic reasons why british trash scotish people…

he was searching for a reason to ban me because i was telling the entire truth about the vBulletin structure right now, and he was not happy with that… so he prowled on me all day long to find a post where i was flawed… not complicated, i’m always insulting members on that site.

btw, what’s next… not sure, stupidity drive the world.

i was trying to converse with Ray Morgan lately, looks like Wayne locked down that possibility. looks like the vBulletin license holders will never see a real Calendar or a rebuild of the Social Groups. i posted earlier that it would be a good alternative for these license holders to stick with 3.8 and use my tools as an alternative to pay twice for their 4.0 …

i have enough of these games of personality… looks like my hopes to see vBulletin emerge from the myst are vain… they are not interested to evolve… and i’m not talking about the IB company, they need money so they want the project to evolve… i talk about Jelsoft’s cows. 3 years of debugs only, with not a single useful feature on the roadmap… pathetic and pointless.

so what, where do i go?… i’ll still code the engines that are on the roadmap here, because compared to Jelsoft, i listen to my clients and i try to deliver all that i announce. the only problem right now is my health… i’m not sick, i’m locked in concrete… my arm is in a plaster and it is my most important engine to be able to code… so i can not right now, but in the next weeks i will finish the recovery and i’m sure to be available to finish debugging everything and releasing other tools.

i’m going to release the Calendar Enhancement pack in the next 10 days… not sure when, as i have to rewrite parts of the SocialGroups bundle to be merged with it and i may not work a lot this week as i have the whole family home. next week will be more efficient.

for vBulletin.com, what next?… sorry but i’m not going back there… i have other lambs to whip. they may have reputations as great support staff, but when you do not need support but you need features, they are not so great… i coded my enhancements on my own all the time in the last 8 years… never was listened to, and even i was leeched by the old guys who stole a lot of codes from the guys at vb.org even when they said « oh no, we have no time to go there »… yeah… bullshiters

i’m not angry, i’m just a free mind, so i talk like that, read my avatar!

i’m building a site this week, for my daughter’s sync-swim club… i need a solid script for all the stuff we put in. vBulletin answer 10% of our needs, and with my addons, 75%… there is no real professional stylers for vBulletin… in the last 8 years, i never saw a single real professional style on that platform… because it is too badly coded. so i will go to another platform, i suppose Joomla, where there is a lot of places where to grab some real efficient styles.

that’s it.. you can comment.. rofl

Is VB Serious

sorry for posting it here, i was about to post over at vb about your post when it was removed and you got banned. but everything you said its true.I have already made up my mine to move 3 of my site to ipb..i l already retained my lic…I’m going to sell the other two that is expire on the 3.8 version.

wow man vb is way out of control

i’m building with Joomla today…

I have a website to build for the Sync-Swim club i’m the CEO of, and even if i built the whole Calendar enhancements package for that purpose only, i will switch to Joomla and use their forum and calendar extensions, because they are more secure and easier to integrate with the large collection of themes built commercially for Joomla.

so we will have a go with Joomla comparaisons.. lol
